Homemade Fajita Seasoning

Gluten Free spice mixes are expensive and can be difficult to locate in stores. Making your own is more affordable and can be customized to what you and your family likes.  This Fajita Seasoning recipe is no different. It’s packed the flavor and lacks the extra salt and fillers the packets contain. Take five minutes of your day and make this easy recipe.

What Spices Are in Fajita Seasoning

Fajita Seasoning is a blend of spices containing chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt and pepper.

Fajita Seasoning vs Taco SeasoningWhat’s the Difference

Fajita Seasoning and Taco Seasoning are interchangeable. One can be used in place of the other. Both seasonings blends have the same flavor profile. While specific spices and amounts used with vary slightly, both will work in recipes without noticing much difference.

Homemade Gluten Free Fajita Seasoning on Spoon

How Much Does the Recipe Make

This recipe makes just over 2 Tablespoons of mix.

It is enough seasoning for 1 ½ – 2 pounds of chicken, which I use for Chicken Fajita Nachos.

If you’re using it for taco seasoning, it will work with 1 ½ – 2 pounds of ground beef. After browning your beef, add the seasoning and 2/3 cup water and simmer for 5-10 minutes.

The recipe doubles easily if you like a more intense flavor or are cooking a larger amount of meat.

Recipe Notes

This recipe is super simple but I do have a couple tips.

The Chili Powder – I use a mild chili powder blend that comes from the store or online. McCormick’s is Gluten Free. It’s inexpensive and you probably have a jar in your cabinet. You could also use a specific chili powder such as Ancho if you wanted to.

Heat Level – For families that like spicier foods, add some cayenne pepper to the mix.

Gluten Free Fajita Seasoning

In just a few minutes you have a fajita seasoning blend that is gluten free and cost pennies to make. Instead of hunting down a safe packet mix at the store, reach in your cabinet and use the spices you already have.

More Gluten Free Mexican Recipes

Here are some more Gluten Free Mexican Recipes to try.

Chicken Fajita Nachos – This recipe is the marriage of Chicken Fajitas and Nachos.  It uses the fajita seasoning recipe in this post so it’s a great way to test out this seasoning mix for yourself.

Instant Pot Refried Beans – Refried beans from the can are all well and good but these beans are worth trying. The Instant Pot saves time by eliminating bean soaking time. For a couple bucks, you can make three times the amount that comes in one can.

Restaurant Style Salsa – You can’t have Mexican Night without some good salsa. Toss all the ingredients into the blender and chill for the flavors to meld. Big batch of salsa….done!

Chucky Guacamole – This is my version of Tableside Guacamole.  Avocados are mostly mashed with a few larger pieces but the ingredients that get mixed it give it great flavor and texture.

Homemade Pickled Jalapenos – Jalapenos are perfect for adding some heat to the nachos. These are easy to make and perfect for those new to canning.

The Perfect Margarita – A great meal needs a great drink. This recipe uses tequila, Triple sec, lime, and a little agave syrup for sweetness. Mix it together and serve in a salt rimmed glass…or not.
