Since rice is a common gluten free side dish in my house, I’m always looking for new ways to use it. Using simple ingredients from the pantry makes this easy yellow rice the perfect recipe to add to your rotation. It’s bright in color and full of flavor.

Yellow rice is a dish that is popular in Spanish, Moroccan, Peruvian, and Caribbean cultures as well as others. White rice is used and is colored yellow by the spices used in the recipe.

What Gives Yellow Rice Its Color
Yellow rice gets its color from the spice used in the recipe. Saffron, turmeric, and annatto can all be used in a recipe to give the rice it’s bright yellow color.
I use turmeric in my recipe because it’s inexpensive and easy to find.
Recipe Tips
Rice – Use White, Jasmine or Basmati Rice
Spices – Adjust the spice amount to your taste. More black pepper for a heat, less turmeric for a lighter color. It all works.

Easy Yellow Rice
Ingredients
- 1 ½ Cups Water
- ¾ Cup White Rice
- 1 ½ Tbs. Olive Oil
- 3 Tbs. Dried Minced Onion
- ½ tsp Ground Turmeric
- ½ tsp Garlic Powder
- ½ tsp Fine Salt
- ⅛ tsp Ground Black Pepper
Instructions
- Add the water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat.
- Add the Olive Oil, Rice and remaining ingredients.
- Cover, reduce to low and simmer for 17-20 minutes until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed
- Fluff rice with a fork and serve
