Gluten Free Apple Crisp

This recipe is ALL ABOUT YOU! Why, you ask?  It’s because we’re making a Single Serve Gluten Free Apple Crisp! That’s right. You don’t have to share this comforting little dessert with anyone. Well, if you are having a share with others day the recipe can easily be doubled for a date night or in other multiples to make for the family.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp is Really All About The Topping

When you think about apple crisp ingredients there isn’t much to discuss. The inside is similar to an apple pie but not as saucy. Apple Crisp doesn’t have a bottom or top pie crust. Instead, the crisp gets a brown sugar sweetened buttery topping. It also has oats which help with the crisp namesake.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp Tips

Spoonful of Gluten Free Apple Crisp

Here are some tips and questions about making apple crisp.

Are Oats Gluten Free?

Apple Crisps have oats in them in. It’s the way it is. A common question is if oats are gluten free. Here’s what you need to know.

Oats are naturally gluten free but are easily cross contaminated with grains that do contain gluten. If you are celiac, make sure you are using Certified Gluten Free Oats like Bob’s Red Mill for this recipe.

How to Make Oat Flour From Gluten Free Oats

Oats and Oat Flour

I keep oat flour, like Bob’s Red Mill, on hand, but it’s easy to make if you don’t have any.  Here’s how to make it.

  1. Place oats in a food processor, blender, or a coffee grinder.
  2. Blend oats until they are a fine powder.
  3. Use in place of store bought oat flour.

Note: One cup of oats makes one cup of oat flour. With this recipe you only need a tablespoon of oat flour so you just have to process a tablespoon of oats.

How to Make Gluten Free and Dairy Free Apple Crisp

The dairy in this recipe comes from the butter. If you have dairy allergies, try using a plant based dairy free butter or margarine like blue bonnet lactose free.

More Tips

The Apples – Use an apple variety that you like. Tart Granny Smiths, sweet Honeycrisps  or whatever kind you like. Just remember, softer apples may cook a little faster than firmer ones so adjust your cooking time a little, as needed.

Apple Slices – Cut the apples in thin slices. Don’t worry about them being exact. You just want them thin so they have time to cook through.

Brown Sugar – Use the brown sugar you have in the cabinet. Dark or light both work in the recipe.

Adjust Ingredient Amounts as Needed – Don’t be afraid to add a little more butter or a little less sugar. Apple pie spice instead of cinnamon would be great!  This is a forgiving recipe and doesn’t follow the “baking is a science” thought process.

How to Reheat Apple Crisp

Why do you need reheating instructions if it’s a single serve recipe? Well, it might be because it’s been a long week and you need two of them to help the week along. That extra one in the fridge should be as good as the first. Reheating is simple.

Don’t bother preheating the oven. It’s already been cooked once. Pop the extra crisp in the oven and turn on the oven to 350º. Warm the dessert until it’s heated through and the top has crisped back up. Enjoy.
