Instructions

  • Place apples in a buttered or greased small oven safe baking dish.
  • In a small bowl combine oat flour, brown sugar and butter.
  • Using two forks or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Add oats and cinnamon and mix it one final time.
  • Sprinkle the topping over the apples.
  • Place apple crisp on a small cookie sheet to keep anything from falling into the oven and make transferring to the oven easier, if desired.
  • Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until the apples are tender.
  • Serve with whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

The Apples – Use an apple variety that you like. Tart Granny Smiths, sweet Honeycrisps  or whatever kind you like. Just remember, softer apples may cook a little faster than firmer ones so adjust your cooking time a little, as needed.
Apple Slices – Cut the apples in thin slices. Don’t worry about them being exact. You just want them thin so they have time to cook through.
Brown Sugar – Use the brown sugar you have in the cabinet. Dark or light both work in the recipe.
Adjust Ingredient Amounts as Needed – Don’t be afraid to add a little more butter or a little less sugar. Apple pie spice instead of cinnamon would be great!  This is a forgiving recipe and doesn’t follow the “baking is a science” thought process.
How to Make Gluten Free and Dairy Free Apple Crisp - The dairy in this recipe comes from the butter. If you have dairy allergies, try using a plant based dairy free butter or margarine like blue bonnet lactose free.
How to Reheat Apple Crisp - Don’t bother preheating the oven. It’s already been cooked once. Pop the extra crisp in the oven and turn on the oven to 350º. Warm the dessert until it’s heated through and the top has crisped back up.
