Are you looking for a gluten free homemade granola recipe but don’t want to bake it in the oven? Maybe you’re just short on time. If either of those things sound like you then make this 5-minute Gluten Free Stovetop Granola. This lightly sweetened granola is the perfect mix in for adding some bulk to your yogurt.
What is Granola?
Granola is a mixture of various ingredients that starts with rolled oats, some kind of sweetener like brown sugar or honey. Various other ingredients are added like dried fruits, nuts and seeds. The mixture is then typically baked and cooled. It is largely eaten as part of a breakfast or separately as a snack.
Cooking Stovetop Granola in a Skillet
Granola is often baked in the oven. It takes 20-30 minutes to get it nice and toasted.
Stovetop granola cooked in a skillet takes about 5 minutes. This reduces oven preheat time, cooking time and energy use.
Is Granola Healthy
Granola is a nutritious and filling option when it’s filled with whole ingredients.
You want granola to be high in fiber and protein filled items like oats, nuts and seeds. Some sweet items like dried fruits are good, but they also add to the sugar content of the granola.
Read the packaging closing on store bought granola options. You want to make sure they are not high in added sugar, fat and oils and fillers. It also needs to clearly state gluten free on the packaging if you follow a gluten free diet.
Making your own Gluten Free Granola lets you control how healthy the granola is.
Stovetop Granola Tips
Here are some tips for making Stovetop Granola.
Use Old Fashioned Rolled Oats – Old Fashioned Oats work best with this recipe because they have more texture and are not pressed as thin as quick oats.
Gluten Free Oats must be labeled as such – Even though oats are gluten free, they are known for being processed along other grains which can cause cross contamination. If you cannot find gluten free oats where you shop, they are available online.
Oil Use – Lots of granola recipes use oil. I don’t find it is needed in this recipe.
Fruits and Nuts – I use dried cranberries and sliced almonds in my recipe but change up the recipe as you like with other nuts, seeds or dried fruit.
The sweetener – I like the flavor of honey in this recipe but you could also try things like maple syrup or agave nectar to see what you like best.
