Dairy Free Chocolate Pudding

I recently heard someone describe pudding as something “old people eat”. I disagree. Pudding is a dessert or snack for people of all ages.  You can make it from scratch or a boxed mix. It’s even in the dairy case and on grocery store shelves. But what about Dairy Free Chocolate Pudding?

You can’t have dairy products? If it’s a snack for people of all ages, shouldn’t dairy free people of all ages be able to have it too?  Let’s skip the grocery store scavenger hunt and make an easy dairy free chocolate pudding at home.

Dairy Free Chocolate Pudding

Don’t let a dietary restriction stop you.  Making Dairy Free Chocolate Pudding is not any more difficult than making instant pudding.  With ingredients you probably already have at home and a simple recipe, you’re minutes away from homemade chocolate pudding.

Making Dairy Free Chocolate Pudding

This dairy free chocolate pudding is a really easy recipe that anyone can make. I promise making it from scratch is no more difficult than making it from a box. It takes a few more minutes to make, but let me tell you why.

It takes about 5 minutes longer to make homemade because you’re cooking it. That is well worth the extra time and effort for those that can’t have pudding because they exclude dairy from their diets.

Notes About the Ingredients

  • I made this pudding using almond milk but try it with your favorite non-dairy milk. I think coconut milk would be great for this recipe.
  • For the chocolate chips I used the Enjoy Life Brand. Their brand is super allergy friendly and free from 14 common allergens.
  • Hershey’s Cocoa is vegan but read your packages carefully. You want your cocoa to be 100% cocoa with no other trace ingredients.
  • If you like whip cream on you pudding, look for dairy free options in the grocery store from brands like Reddi-wip. They have non-dairy coconut and almond milk varieties.

Notes About the Recipe

  • Once you place the dry ingredients in the pan, whisk it well. You want to get out any lumps of cornstarch and cocoa so the you end up with a smooth pudding.
  • While it’s cooking, whisk constantly. You don’t want lumpy pudding
  • Putting plastic directly on top of the pudding prevents “pudding skin”. It’s not my thing but, if you’re like Tara and actually like pudding skin, skip the plastic wrap.

What are Your Thoughts?

Doesn’t this sound easy? I told you it is. It’s almost as fast as instant. You can even top it with a non-dairy whipped cream.  Now look at what you have. A rich and creamy dessert that YOU MADE, dairy free.
