Notes

  • Use Certified Gluten Free Oat Flour – Oats are often cross contaminated with grains containing gluten. If you are celiac or sensitive to oats make sure you use brands of oat flour that are certified gluten free like Anthony's Organic Whole Grain Oat Flour or Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oat Flour.
  • Be Patient – It takes a few minutes to press and work the dough into the pie plate so be patient. Continue pressing and working the dough onto the bottom and up the sides of the pie plate until it covers the plate.
  • Make Oat Flour – You can make your own oat flour by adding gluten free oats to a food processor or high speed blender and blending it into a fine powder. It is a 1:1 ratio meaning 1 cup of oats makes 1 cup of oat flour.
  • Omit the Sugar – Remove the sugar from the recipe if you are using the dough for a savory pie.
  • Make a Pie Crust Shield – When baking your pie crust with filling, make this easy Aluminum Foil Pie Crust Shield to keep the crust from over browning.
