This recipe is easy to make, but the time and measurements are not always exact. Here are some tips for a successful experience.

Brown Rice Flour and Water Recipe Amounts– The dough for this recipe should be thick and have the consistency of play doh. Add a tablespoon or so of water if the dough is too crumbly or a little more rice flour if the dough is too wet. Using your hands for some of the mixing will help you know if the consistency is right.

Wax Paper Helps When Rolling the Dough – I recommend using wax paper placed on top of the dough for rolling out the treats. It’s less expensive than parchment paper. Use Parchment Paper for the pan itself.

Use a Pizza Cutter – Fancy shaped treats are pretty and more work. Your dog doesn’t care what shape the treats are in. They just appreciate the treat. A pizza cutter makes quick work of cutting the treats.

Baking Times Vary – Baking times aren’t exact for the treats. While the recipe states to bake the treats for 25 minutes, they can still be soft. The longer they bake and dry out, the longer storage life you will get out of the treats. If the treats are not as baked and dried as you would like after 25 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to low and bake longer checking every 20 minutes or so until done.  You can also transfer them to a food dehydrator for a few hours if you have one.

Storing the Dog Treats – Store homemade dog treats the same way you store people cookies. Use an airtight container or Ziplock bag and store them at room temperature for a week or so. For longer storage pop them in the freezer.

Skip Pumpkin Pie Spice – According to PetMD, nutmeg should not be consumed by dogs, so do not use a premade pumpkin pie spice unless you are sure it does not contain nutmeg.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Brown Rice Flour
  • 1 Cup Pumpkin Puree
  • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Dried Ginger

Instructions

  • Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease the pan.
  • Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl until a stiff dough forms. If needed, add more water or flour in small amounts as needed until the dough is the right consistency.
  • Place the dough on the baking sheet and cover with wax paper or another piece of parchment paper.
  • Roll the dough out evenly until it’s as thin as possible, about ¼ inch.
  • Use a pizza cutter and cut the dough into small squares. Don’t worry about exact sizes.
  • Bake for 25 minutes. (see notes below in regards to cooking time)
  • Cool completely and store in an airtight container or Ziplock bag.
