A Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak. Is it possible? Is it as flavorful as a traditional Philly Cheesesteak? Is it Gluten Free? YES! YES! YES!
Philly Cheesesteaks have been around since 1930 when hot dog vendor Pat Olivieri created it. You know the sandwich. It starts with shaved steak that’s grilled. Then it’s topped with sautéed peppers, onions and melty cheese. Finally, it gets all piled into a sub roll. It’s an amazing sandwich full of flavor. This filling sandwich is full of carbs and gluten of course, because of the bread, not the ingredients in it. The ingredients are full of flavor and taste great on their own so make a Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak Skillet instead. It’s Gluten Free, fewer calories, and won’t leave you feeling heavy from the bread.
Philly Cheesesteaks usually use thinly sliced ribeye steak for the meat. I can sometimes find a package of this in the meat department of the grocery store already shaved and ready to go. If they don’t have the shaved beef, buying the ribeye and thinly slicing it can be expensive and time consuming. As a kid, Mom always made the sandwiches out of Steak-Umms. That’s what I use for this recipe. They’re easy to find in the freezer section of the grocery store and go on sale every few weeks. In addition to those reasons, they cook from frozen so the recipe comes together quickly for weeknight meals. Serve the Low Carb Philly Cheesesteak with a salad and dinner is done.
